Brave New World by A Roving Eye
"This shot was one of my entries for the theme ‘Book Titles’. I set off one afternoon roaming the streets of Hastings in search of literary inspiration. I walked past this launderette and then back-tracked. The strong geometric shapes and bright colours caught my eye. It looked futuristic but soul-less. I went inside. Empty except for the sound of someone’s weekly wash whirring away. Ideally the shot would have suited a super wide angle lens but recently I’ve been shooting ‘light’ – a Canon Powershot. A camera that doesn’t draw attention because of its compact size. I set the lens at its widest setting (around 28mm), I held the camera low and noticed the reflection of the black and white tiles from the washing machines on the left. I opened the door of a tumble dryer on my right to see if it would create a reflection too – with a bit of shuffling around it did. By now my son was getting ‘irritable’ stuck in his pram (he was parked to my left) so I took half a dozen shots and left – task completed." A Roving Eye
